ORACLES: Lesson 53

Compliments are always nice as they affirm something about ourselves that we celebrate, casually acknowledge, or are oblivious to. It’s flattering to hear remarks that celebrate and encourage who we are or what we do. In most instances positive sentiment reinforces the esteem of the purest heart.

Interestingly enough, I have also seen where too many compliments turn the most timid into the most conceited and the most pure into the most puffed up, all without warning. I remember having a psalmist minister in our church many years ago, and though supremely gifted, the attitude and behavior, which I presume came from the many compliments given, was the very thing that changed my overall opinion of them. In the same way, you may be gifted or beautiful, but doors are shut because the compliments are no longer serving to better you.

You are beautiful. You are talented. You are smart. You are funny. You are strong. You are anointed. I love your hair. You are a wonderful person. You’re so gifted. You are the sharpest person known. You are enjoyable. You are sweet. You are necessary. These words are true but we all must ensure they are not the words that erode humility and sincerity of heart, and ultimately limit forward movement or cause our downfall.

God knows every quality about you that others compliment. He even knows qualities within you that have yet to be revealed. He made you! Which is why everything we are and all that we have is for His glory! Which means responding to people with “thank you” is befitting but keeping perspective is vital.

Live with confidence while receiving compliments with a grain of salt. Confidence doesn’t deny the blessing but it also doesn’t gloat or boast. Rather, when you’re confident, you balance grace, sureness and focused determination whether people compliment you or not, because you know it’s God’s doing—and you’re just walking in it! [snap snap]

You are smart, intelligent, beautiful and a host of other adjectives, but recognize who made you. When you do that, you are being meek. And God promises, “the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” (Psalm 37:11, Matthew 5:5) Modesty and humility make for a great combination in life!
