“There is nothing wrong with a small work. Little can indeed be much if God is in it.”
There is always work to be done in the local church, and while the work is noble, because it’s an offering to God, it is very much challenging at times because it’s also impassioned volunteer work. So cherished is the desire to serve that many have substituted their relationship with God for their works; and in affect, have allowed conflict and controversy to spoil the sincerity of heart.
One of the main issues I have noticed is when gifts, talents and assignments are compared, even rivaled, with other people who also have a heart to serve. Somehow the collision of personalities always drives one person away from the very thing that honors God and brings great joy to their lives. I’m bringing it to your attention so you are not deceived. Your service does not have to become a competition with others, nor should it replace your relationship with God or His people. Always keep in mind why you serve and for whom you work.
God is the reason you began serving, singing, giving and doing, and He should continue to be the focus even when others are less than committed, difficult to work with, or just resistant to who you are and what you offer. Whether their response is due to jealousy, intimidation, personal issues or just plain meanness, your initial reason in doing the work, was God, and your goal in continuing the work should be also be, God.
It’s easy to walk away at the first sign of conflict but “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” (Proverbs 24:10) Certainly no one likes to work amidst struggle, but the very fact that you’re there means you’ve got the grace to maintain and manage whatever God has called you to or put in your heart to do!
You can be an aroma offering to God or just as foul as the one you find hard to get along with. Keep your perspective! “[F]or God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” (Hebrews 6:10)
Keep looking to the Lord as you serve with gladness of heart.
